In 2009, the year he turned 17, he shot all 12 arrows for 10s at the National Sports Festival as a Chungbuk Sports High School archer, and the world record was certified.
The breakthrough yearThe year he turned 18, he made the national team for the first time, won the individual event at the World Cup in Ogden in August, and took a qualifying world record and golds in the team and individual events at the Guangzhou Asian Games in November.
In 2011, he graduated from high school and joined Cheongju City Hall, and in July he won both the individual and team events at the Turin World Championships. In 2012, he missed the London Olympic team in fourth place, then won the World Cup Final in Tokyo in the fall.

In 2017, he won the individual and mixed events at the World Cup Final in Rome. In 2018, he won individual gold at the Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games for the first time in eight years.
In 2021, he won a second Olympic gold in the Tokyo team event and lost in the individual quarterfinals. In September he won three golds at the Yankton World Championships, and he married that year. In 2022, he received the Cheongnyong Medal of the Order of Sports Merit. In 2023, he won two golds at the Berlin World Championships but, at the Hangzhou Asian Games, was kept out of every event by his qualifying-round ranking.
The year he turned 32, he won the team, mixed team and individual events at the Paris Olympics, raising his Olympic golds to five, the most for any Korean. In 2025, he won the team title at the Gwangju World Championships. In 2026, he earned a place at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and was chosen as captain of the Korean team.
