The breakthrough yearIn July 2010, the year he turned 18, he scored 16.150 on vault at the Japan Cup International Invitational Gymnastics, stepping onto the senior stage. In October he placed fourth on vault at his first World Championships. In November he won vault gold at the Guangzhou Asian Games and was reported as the youngest gold medalist on the Korean team.
In 2011, he showed his new vault, now known as the “Yang Hak Seon,” for the first time at the Korea Cup and won vault gold at the World Championships in Tokyo in October. In January 2012, the skill was added to the International Gymnastics Federation’s scoring rules, and in August he won vault gold at the London Olympics, the first gold in Korean gymnastics history.
In 2013, he won a second straight World Championships vault title, the first back-to-back vault titles in 21 years since Yoo Ok-ryul. In 2014, he won silver on vault at the Incheon Asian Games. In 2015, he won silver in the men’s team event at the Gwangju Universiade.
In 2016, he had Achilles tendon surgery and missed the Rio Olympics. In 2017, he reached the final in vault qualification at the Montreal World Championships with the top score, but Sports Seoul writes that he withdrew from the final because of injury. In 2019, he was picked for the Stuttgart World Championships team and reached the final as the top qualifier.
In 2020, the year he turned 28, he married. In 2021, he placed fifth in the vault final at the World Championships. In 2023, he competed on Netflix’s Physical: 100, his left Achilles tendon ruptured, and he went on SBS’s Dolsing Fourmen and said he was preparing for the Paris Olympics. In 2024, he returned with bronze at the National Sports Festival.
In February 2025, the year he turned 33, he appeared with his mother on MBC’s Eommareul Butakhae, and in September he ended his career at the National Sports Festival. In 2026, he became a World Vision ambassador and served as gymnastics commentator on MBC’s Asian Games broadcast.
Yang Hak-seon (born Dec 6, 1992) took the senior stage at the Japan Cup International Invitational Gymnastics on Jul 4, 2010, the year he turned 18, and became known for his vault gold at the Guangzhou Asian Games on Nov 17, 2010, the year he turned 18. He won Olympic gold in 2012, the year he turned 20.
