The year he turned 19, he joined Daejeon Citizen as a priority-pick rookie, started away at Jeju in the K League Classic, and scored his first goal against Pohang in May. In 2016, he was selected as a midfielder in the K League Challenge Best 11.
The breakthrough yearThe year he turned 22, he won gold at the Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games. Sports Kyunghyang wrote that he made his name in earnest at the tournament. He was called up to the senior national team for the first time during the Games and made his debut against Costa Rica on Sept. 7.
In 2019, he played at the Asian Cup, moved to MLS’s Vancouver Whitecaps in February and played the full opening match in March. In 2020, he signed a three-year contract with Russia’s Rubin Kazan.

In 2026, he scored the equalizer against the Czech Republic at the World Cup, moved to Portugal’s FC Porto in July and scored his first goal for the club against Benfica in September.
