In 1995, the year he turned 13, he left Seoul with his family for San Diego, California. His parents ran a small Chinese restaurant there, and he says he helped in the kitchen after school. In late 2002, he was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, for a year with a U.S. Army artillery unit. In 2003, he was also sent to the bunker where Saddam Hussein was found.
Around 2006, the year he turned 24, he started cooking when he enrolled at Le Cordon Bleu after seeing its students on the street. He found a kitchen helper job on his first day of class and worked at the Japanese restaurant Urasawa while a student. In 2015, after The French Laundry, Benu and Aziza, he opened his own restaurant, Mosu, in San Francisco. In 2016, it earned one Michelin star within eight months of opening.
In 2017, with investment from CJ CheilJedang, he opened Mosu Seoul in Hannam-dong. In 2018, it earned its first star in the Michelin Guide Seoul 2019. In 2019, it moved up to two stars. It kept two stars every year through 2021.
In 2022, Mosu Seoul rose to three Michelin stars. The same year he opened a sister restaurant in Hong Kong. In 2023, Gaon closed and Mosu became in effect the only three-star restaurant in Korea, but in November the new contract with CJ CheilJedang fell through.
The breakthrough yearMosu Seoul closed at the end of January 2024. On Sept. 17, 2024, the year he turned 42, he became known as a judge alongside Paik Jong-won on Netflix’s Culinary Class Wars, and in November he appeared as a witness at the Seoul city council audit.
In 2025, he moved Mosu Seoul to Itaewon and reopened it, and in December the second season of Culinary Class Wars was released. In 2026, Mosu Seoul received two stars in the Michelin Guide Seoul & Busan 2026.
Sung Anh (born Jan 18, 1982) started cooking around 2006, the year he turned 24, by enrolling at the culinary school Le Cordon Bleu, and became known on Sep 17, 2024, the year he turned 42, when Netflix’s Culinary Class Wars, on which he was a judge, was released. Mosu Seoul, which he opened, earned three Michelin stars in 2022, the year he turned 40.
