The year he turned 18, he began his senior career at the Egyptian club Al Mokawloon Al Arab. The year he turned 20, he joined Basel in Switzerland and scored for Egypt at the Olympics.

The year he turned 22, he signed for Chelsea for a fee in the region of £11m. In 2015, after a loan at Fiorentina, Chelsea sent him to Roma on a season-long loan. In November 2016 he scored a hat-trick for Roma against Bologna.

The breakthrough yearIn June, Liverpool signed him from Roma for a club-record £36.9m. The year he turned 25, he reached 20 goals for Liverpool in his 26th game.

The year he turned 26, he scored 32 Premier League goals, a record for a 38-game season, and was voted PFA Player of the Year. In 2020, Liverpool were presented with the Premier League trophy, and he scored his 100th goal for the club that October.

In 2021 he scored a hat-trick in a 5–0 win at Manchester United. In 2022 he shared the Premier League Golden Boot and signed a three-year contract. In 2023, Liverpool rejected a £150m bid from Al Ittihad for him.

In 2024 he was voted Liverpool’s Player of the Season for the fourth time. The year he turned 33, he won the Premier League with Liverpool, along with the Golden Boot, the Playmaker award and a third PFA Player of the Year award.

The year he turned 34, he played his last game for Liverpool, captained Egypt to a World Cup knockout win and joined Trabzonspor.
