In December 2014, the year she turned 24, she was chosen for the lead of Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden in an audition with a ratio of 1,500 to 1. She had no acting experience until then and was known from ads. Around 2015, she took her first solo lead role in Kim So-yeon’s short film Moon Young. It was shot before The Handmaiden.
The breakthrough yearIn 2016, the year she turned 26, The Handmaiden was invited to the competition at the 69th Cannes Film Festival and was released in Korea on June 1, with her as the maid Sook-hee. In November she won Best New Actress at the 37th Blue Dragon Film Awards.
In January 2017, Moon Young, which she had shot earlier, was released, and in December she played Yeon-hee in 1987: When the Day Comes. In 2018, Little Forest was released, and in July she played Go Ae-shin in her first TV drama, tvN’s Mr. Sunshine.
In 2019, she was confirmed for director Choi Dong-hoon’s new film. In 2020, it was decided that Space Sweepers would be released on Netflix instead of in theaters. Space Sweepers was released in February 2021, and in July she moved to Management mmm.
In 2022, she played Na Hee-do in tvN’s Twenty-Five Twenty-One and won the Baeksang Arts Award for Best Actress in TV at the 58th ceremony. Alienoid part 1 was released in July. In 2023, she took on her first genre drama in SBS’s Revenant and shared the grand prize with Lee Je-hoon at the SBS Drama Awards at the end of the year.
In 2024, Alienoid: Return to the Future was released, and tvN’s Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born, which began in October, ended with a 16.5% rating. In 2025, she won the Best Actress in TV award at the 61st Baeksang Arts Awards for Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born.
In 2026, the year she turned 36, she appeared in her first regular variety show since her debut, tvN’s Curtain Up, Class! In April she appeared in the trailer Choegoui Gwangaek for the 22nd Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival.
