The year she turned 21, she placed first in MBC’s 5th open recruitment class for actors. She had come up from Jeju and was working at a trading company. In 1974, she returned in Reed. She says that after passing, she was disappointed by errand-running and went back to her old job, then returned when MBC contacted her. In 1975, she won a new actress award for Tide. In 1976, she married, and in Purity she played Gim Man-deok into old age.
The breakthrough yearThe year she turned 29, she was cast as the eldest daughter-in-law in MBC’s Country Diaries, eight years after her debut. She kept the role for 22 years, until 2002.
In 1984, she played Queen Insu into old age in The Ume Tree in the Midst of the Snow. In 1985, she won the Korea Broadcasting Prizes TV acting award. From 1986, she was the Miwon advertising model for 16 years.
In 1989, she won her first drama grand prize, for The Confines of Love, 17 years after her debut. In 1990, she won a grand prize at MBC too, for The Dancing Gayageum. In 1993, she won the Baeksang Arts Awards TV Grand Prize. In 1994, she gave 100 million won in scholarships to her alma mater.
In 1998, she divorced. In 1999, she returned to the stage after five years. In 2000, she won the SBS grand prize for Virtue and had won a drama grand prize at all three major broadcasters. In 2002, Country Diaries ended.
In 2004, she won the MBC and KBS grand prizes on consecutive days, for Ode to the Han River and More Beautiful Than a Flower. In 2006, she won best actress at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival for Family Ties. In 2007, she returned to the stage in the play Mother after seven years and received the Okgwan Order of Cultural Merit. In 2010, she received an honorary doctorate in literature from Jeju National University.
In 2012, in the year of her 40th anniversary, she danced six dances in a play. In 2015, she won her third KBS grand prize, for All About My Mom. In 2016, she appeared in a musical drama for the first time. In 2019, Exit drew 8.8 million viewers. In 2020, she received the Eungwan Order of Cultural Merit.
In 2021, she played a romance with a partner 33 years younger in Everglow. In 2022, she played a Jeju haenyeo in Our Blues. In 2024, she returned to the stage after seven years. In 2026, she appeared in Sold Out on You.
