In 2017, she entered Gwangju Sports High School, and that fall she set a world record of 686 in cadet qualifying at the Youth World Championships. In March 2018, the year she turned 17, she placed eighth at the national team trials for her first national team spot, and in July she won silver in the individual event at the third Asia Cup leg.
In July 2019, she won two golds at the Berlin World Cup, her first senior international event, and ten days later won the Tokyo Olympics test event. In 2020, as a Gwangju Women’s University first-year student, she won six golds at the university and corporate archery championships.
The breakthrough yearThe year she turned 20, she made the Tokyo Olympic team in April by placing third in the final evaluation, and in July won the mixed, women’s team and individual golds, the first Korean to win three golds at a single Summer Olympics. At the September World Championships she won the mixed and team events.
In 2022, she won the team event at the Gwangju World Cup and the individual event at the World Cup Final, and in November took part in the Gwangju Bank women’s archery team induction ceremony. At her first Asian Games in 2023, she won gold in the team event and silver in the individual event. Earlier, in August, at the Berlin World Championships, she placed in neither the team nor the individual event.
In March 2024, she finished 21st at the third national team trial and missed the Paris Olympics. That month she posted an apology over a social media post.
In 2025, she returned to the national team after a year, won silver in the mixed event and bronze in the team and individual events at the World Championships in Gwangju, and won the World Cup Final in October for the first time in three years. In 2026, she made the eight-woman national team but placed fifth in the final evaluations and was not chosen for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
An San (born Feb 27, 2001) was first picked for the national archery team on Mar 22, 2018, the year she turned 17, as a second-year high school student, and became known when she won three golds at the Tokyo Olympics, finishing with the individual title on Jul 30, 2021, the year she turned 20. In 2025, the year she turned 24, she won the World Cup Final for the second time.
