The year he turned 18, KIA took him first in the rookie second-stage draft. In 2007 he joined the KIA Tigers and went 1-2 in his first season. On Sept. 29 he started and earned his first career win.
The breakthrough yearThe year he turned 21, in his third pro season, he went 12-5 in the regular season and started Game 4 of the Korean Series against SK. That November he pitched against Yomiuri, the Japan Series champions, at the Korea-Japan Club Championship.
In 2010 he tied for second in wins with 16 and started the Guangzhou Asian Games semifinal. The national team beat Taiwan in the final for gold. In 2014 he pitched in the Incheon Asian Games final for another gold medal and won the first Choi Dong-won Award. In 2015 he led the league in ERA and married that December.
In 2017 he went 20-6 with a 3.44 ERA, the first 20 wins by a Korean-born pitcher in 22 years. In the Korean Series he threw a Game 2 shutout and saved Game 5 to win series MVP. In 2019 he led the league in ERA again with 2.29, for the second time after 2015.
In 2020 he went 11-10. In 2021 he signed with the Texas Rangers, made his first major league start in May and returned to KIA in December. In 2022 he reached 150 career wins, the fourth pitcher to do so and the youngest at the time.
In 2023 he threw 170 innings for a ninth straight season, a first in the KBO. In 2024 he passed Song Jin-woo for the most career strikeouts, and KIA won the Korean Series.
In 2025 he became the second pitcher to pass 2,600 career innings, and in December he signed a two-plus-one-year, 4.5 billion won free agent deal with KIA. On Sept. 11, 2026, the year he turned 38, he earned his 197th career win, three short of 200.
Yang Hyeon-jong (born Mar 1, 1988) joined the KIA Tigers in 2007, the year he turned 19, and became known when he started Game 4 of the Korean Series on Oct 20, 2009, in his third pro season, the year he turned 21. He won 20 games in 2017, the year he turned 29.
