Around 1998, the year he turned 16, he took his first step into the music world as a member of the six-member group Fan Club from Taehung Planning. Afterward he worked as a backup dancer for Park Jin-young and Park Ji-yoon.

The breakthrough yearThe year he turned 20, he debuted as a solo artist on JYP with the first album Bad Guy. Together with the follow-up, he reached the top of popularity in a short time.

In 2003 the second album’s title track “How to Avoid the Sun” rose to the upper ranks of the pop charts. In 2004 he played Lee Young-jae in KBS2’s Full House, and at the end of the year he won three awards at the KBS Drama Awards.

In 2005 he held his first solo concert, three years after his debut. In 2006 he was named for the first time to Time’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2007 his five-year contract with JYP ended, and he became the first Korean singer to hold a solo concert at Tokyo Dome in Japan.

In 2008 he entered the U.S. market with the Hollywood film Speed Racer and released the fifth album Rainism. In 2009 he became the first Asian to take the lead in a Hollywood film, in Ninja Assassin.

In 2010 he received an active-duty notice but postponed it because he was enrolled in graduate school. In 2011 he became the first Asian entertainer to be named to the Time 100 twice, and that autumn he enlisted for active duty. Around 2012 he served in the Defense Media Agency’s PR support unit.

In early 2013 he officially acknowledged his relationship with the actress Kim Tae-hee, and he was discharged that summer. In 2014 he returned with the sixth full-length album Rain Effect. In 2015 he founded Rain Company. In 2016 he appeared in SBS’s Come Back Mister.

In 2017 he married Kim Tae-hee, and their first daughter was born that autumn. In 2018 he played Kang Dong-su in JTBC’s Sketch. In 2019 the film Race to Freedom: Um Bok Dong opened and a second daughter was born.

In 2020 he was active in the mixed group SSAK3 with Yoo Jae-suk and Lee Hyori. That year his 2017 song “Gang” also rose back up the music charts amid the “one Gang a day” craze. In 2021 he returned with the mini album PIECES by RAIN. In 2022 he played the doctor Cha Young-min in tvN’s Ghost Doctor.

In 2023 he donated 100 million won to the Community Chest of Korea and announced STILL RAINING, a run of solo concerts in the United States. In 2024 he played the bodyguard Seo Do-yoon in Disney+’s Red Swan. In 2025 he was cast as the villain Baek Jeong in Netflix’s Bloodhounds season 2. In 2026 Bloodhounds season 2 was released.
