The year he turned 23, he debuted in the play Woyzeck. He had entered the Korea National University of Arts in 1996 and graduated in the third class of its School of Drama. In 2004, he appeared on screen for the first time in the film Annyeong, Ari, and founded the theater troupe Gongyeon Baedal Service Ganda with colleagues.
In 2008, he won the Young Actor Award at the 5th Miryang Summer Performing Arts Festival. In 2011, he married the actor Park Bo-kyung, a classmate from the university’s School of Drama.
Around 2012, he played Man-su in the play Chilsu and Mansu. In 2014, he appeared in the musical The Goddess Is Watching. A year later, he played Nam Eun in SBS’s Six Flying Dragons. In 2016, his second child was born.
The breakthrough yearThe year he turned 40, the film The Outlaws was released and his role as Wi Seong-rak became known. That November, he won Best Supporting Actor at the 38th Blue Dragon Film Awards.
In 2018, Dark Figure of Crime, in which he played Detective Jo, passed 2 million viewers. In 2019, Extreme Job passed 10 million viewers on the 15th day of release, and that October he received the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s commendation at the Korean Popular Culture and Arts Awards.
In 2020, he won Best Supporting Actor at the Grand Bell Awards for Extreme Job and became an ambassador for the Changwon Sculpture Biennale. In 2021, Space Sweepers was released on Netflix and he appeared in the music play Taeil. In 2022, he was elected second president of the Korea National University of Arts alumni association.
In 2023, he took his first solo lead since debut in Count. In 2024, he worked again with Ryu Seung-ryong of Extreme Job in Amazon Bullseye.
In 2025, he became an ambassador for Hanam and for the Korea Cycling Federation, and UDT: Our Neighborhood Special Forces was released. In 2026, Netflix’s Husbands in Action was released, and he appears in tvN’s 100 Days of Deception.
